Tour Day 3 - 3rd Night in Pennsylvania


We had another good driving day in western Pennsylvania today. Actually, we made a new friend and another serendipitous discovery before we ever left Bedford. We had time to kill today while we waited for the rest of the group to catch up. I had spotted a great looking set of antique gas pumps, signs and building near town that I wanted to get some photos of this morning. When Sharon and I stopped there was an "open" sign  so we drove in. Ron Miller came out to greet us and we chatted for a few minutes. Then he invited us inside, and in an almost apologetic voice said, "Not everyone finds this stuff interesting..." and proceeded to show us the coolest collection of old radios I have ever seen. He has several console units from the 1930s and 1940s, many table top and portable radios, and even a few TVs. Every single one of them works because he fixed them, and they are all tuned to his own radio station. While we were talking his wife showed Sharon a beautiful quilt that she has been working on for four years. We wound up spending over an hour there and had a great time. Thanks Ron!




When the rest of the group arrived we had lunch at the Jean Bonnet Tavern in Bedford. I just realized that neither Sharon nor I got a picture of this beautiful brick tavern built in the 1700s. During lunch it began raining hard so we ran to the car afterward and got back on the road without ever taking a picture. All the more reason to come back.

We drove a little ways before coming across this former motor court. The units were more recently used by migrant farm laborers so they are still in nice condition.




We made a stop at the Flight 93 National Memorial in Stoystown, Pennsylvania. For those who don't remember, three jet airplanes hit their targets on 9-11-2001. In the fourth plane, the passengers fought back. The plane slammed into the ground at more than 500 mph, killing everyone on board. This memorial is a fitting tribute to their heroism.

Next stop was the Lincoln Highway Experience; a very nice museum created by the Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor.

Our last stop of the day was in downtown Pittsburgh at the Heinz History Center where we had dinner and visited the exhibits. 


Tomorrow we move on to Ohio with a slight detour into West Virginia to shoot another huge tea/coffee pot.

I turned 50 this year. I'm not sure what that has to do with anything; perhaps just some sort of lame justification for the crazy things I've done lately. Galloping to Gallup

Day 6: 325 Miles Total: 2,463 Miles I was finally able to post the Day 5 blog a little while ago, so if you haven't seen it yet, scroll down to the post below this one. Today started out the opposite of yesterday. I got up very early, partly because I gained an hour by moving into the Mountain Time Zone, and partly because I just woke up early. So I checked out of the Blue Swallow Motel and had breakfast at the Kix 66 in Tucumcari. I was on the road shortly after 8:00am. Most of the first part of the trip was on I-40, so I quickly made it the 60 miles to Santa Rosa where I decided to stop at yet another museum. This one is the Route 66 Auto Museum, and it contains mostly automotive memorabilia and 30-40 cars on display in varying condition. Some were very nice; others…not so much. Gettin' my kicks on Route 66

Day 2: 587 Miles Total: 1,166 Miles Things got moving a bit more quickly today. I left my hotel at about 5:45am and gained an hour moving into Central Daylight Time, so the 2 1/2 hour drive to Chicago put me at the start of Route 66 at about 7:15am. I figured I would beat the Saturday morning traffic in Chicago and move swiftly through the city. Generally that was the case, but I was shocked to see hundreds of cars on Lake Shore Drive at that time of the morning. Still, it was nothing like Friday rush hour, so it didn't take long to hit the suburbs, then on to Joliet. The picture below was taken from Lake Shore Drive looking down Jackson. My back is to Lake Michigan. Technically Jackson isn't the true starting point of Route 66. A block away on Adams is the real start, but Adams has since become a one-way street in the wrong direction, so adjustments had to be made.
